BlogsGreen Surprises at Apple's Shareholder Meeting

Who would have thought that one of the world's hottest, richest companies would spend about a third of its annual meeting discussing sustainability, melting glaciers and the finer points of reporting about greenhouse gas emissions? That's what happened at today's Apple Inc. shareholder meeting.

There were two shareholder proposals on the proxy, one of them from As You Sow, where I work, calling for the company to set greenhouse gas reduction goals and do a better job of environmental and corporate responsibility reporting in general. A second proposal, from Harrington Investments, asked the company to establish a permanent board committee on sustainability.

Normally we get our two minutes to speak and then the meeting veers back to more pressing matters such as how Apple should spent $25 billion in cash it's sitting on. However, a politically conservative investor started off the meeting commenting that the glaciers were not melting, climate change was not real, and Board Member Al Gore had become a laughingstock. This prompted a swift rebuttal from another shareholder in support of Mr. Gore, and the company's social and environmental performance went on to curiously pervade much of the meeting.

A question about our proposal, suggesting that the company do a better job on sustainability reporting, led CEO Steve Jobs to minimize the value of reporting, commenting that sustainability groups like to have companies generate lots of reports, make specific commitments, and schmooze at conferences.

"We don't trumpet" all the good things we do, we just try to do the right thing, he said. The problem with this line of argument is that it allows companies to selectively report on things they are making progress on and conveniently avoid dealing with issues they may be ignoring.

Although corporate responsibility reports by Dell and HP may have some greenwash, the benefit of those reports is to set out specific goals and key performance indicators and then discuss how well they have met them.

Another investor began to spontaneously engage Mr. Jobs in a lengthy exchange about the value of product environmental reports posted on Apple's website. The company says the reports "show the complete environmental footprint of every new Apple product so you can see how each one affects the planet."

solar panels

How cutting costs throughout the solar industry will make panels affordable soon

Though solar power has been around for three decades now, it provides barely 0.1 percent of U.S. electricity.

Power from the sun remains considerably more expensive than fossil fuel technologies or other renewables such as wind and geothermal, and high costs have largely relegated solar panel installations to special applications like off-grid homes.

As a result, few people are aware that large-scale deployment is a viable solution to reducing carbon emissions.

Yet the solar industry is set to surprise a whole lot of people. Prices are coming down quickly, and the industry is hoping to revolutionize our energy system.
solar PV growth chart
Solar power growing fast

Solar power has achieved tremendous development recently. Growth rates have averaged nearly 50 percent per year for over a decade. Yet for the technology to contribute a large fraction of our electric supply, this growth must be maintained for at least another 10 years to come.

If current trends continue, photovoltaic (PV) systems could contribute 10 percent of our electricity sometime in the early 2020s, a major gateway to future advances.

Yet the challenge of maintaining 50 percent growth rates for another 10 years cannot be overstated and will be particularly daunting with the current recession.
Ensuring solar prices continue to fall

Historically, solar power prices have dropped as the industry has grown. This trend must continue, and recent analysis by RMI's Energy and Resources Team confirms that today's technologies still have significant cost reduction potential.

* Economies of scale: As PV companies grow, they and their supply chains -- those who produce the silicon and glass for example -- will mature. Manufacturers can then benefit from dropping prices of products including steel wire, advanced chemicals, and electronics.
* Energy and resource efficiency: Each new manufacturing facility can and will be able to produce PV panels with less energy and materials.

Consider that consumables like lubricant, abrasive, chemicals, wire, and ink account for a large part of the PV cost structure and are frequently wasted. At the wafering step, for example, wafers are cleaned after they are cut and then cleaned again before cell processing. This requires excess water and chemicals.

In the future, waste like this will be driven out by a combination of process improvement, engineering breakthroughs, and adoption of best practices.

* Standardized installations: Today, most rooftop installations are designed and permitted individually, then built in place. As solar installations become more widespread and competition increases, installers will reduce costs and complexity by building standardized plug-and-play systems.

If opportunities like these are captured, solar power could be widely competitive by 2015. See this recent report by Photon Consulting for details.

We can look forward to cost reductions accelerating demand for PV systems and driving the industry to scale. As the industry grows, it will achieve additional cost reductions, enabling more demand. This virtuous cycle will propel solar power into the mainstream.
Can't wait for solar prices to drop?

In the meantime, as costs continue to come down, government subsidies and stimulus money can make solar a great investment today.

The federal government offers a 30 percent tax credit on investments in solar power installations. Utilities and state and local governments offer additional incentives. For example, in Colorado, Xcel Energy provides rebates of $3.50 per watt of system cost.

Programs like these can reduce the cost of a PV system by 75 percent. Savings in utility bills can then quickly pay back the purchase price. Check out the DSIRE Database for detailed information about financial incentives in your state.

I read recently that photovoltaic solar (using thin-film) has dropped to a dollar a watt. For a few thousand dollars you could have a batteryless system; sell the power to the electric utility during the day when you´re at work or school, buy it back at night, and forget about expensive and short-lived batteries.

Why dont they just make it mandatory to place solar panels on every major sky scraper? Theres the space right there for renewable energy.

U.S. Vice President Al Gore has invested in an Israeli start-up company with technology that promotes safe driving.

Gore’s cleantech fund Generation Investment Management LLP and five other investors have pledged $10 million in financing to GreenRoad Technologies Ltd., the Israeli business daily Globes reported late Monday.

GreenRoad was founded in 2002. Its proprietary technology-based GreenRoad 360 service provides drivers and fleet managers with real-time, comprehensive and preventative feedback, analysis, reporting and coaching on drivers’ abilities, maneuvers and patterns.

The company says that customers can realize a 50 percent reduction in accident-related costs and a 10 percent reduction in gas usage in the first year, Globes reported.

The company’s headquarters are located near San Francisco. Its research and development center is in Or Yehuda, near Tel Aviv.

Blood Science Offers Possible Carbon Capture Route

United Technologies is looking at how blood captures CO2 to see if this has potential for larger scale carbon capture / sequestration. One targeted industry is coal-fired power plants.
